An often overlooked effect of 5-axis technology is the massive improvement in tool life. In classic 3-axis machining, the tool often has to be perpendicular to the workpiece, which, on angled surfaces, causes the cutting edge to work at points with unfavourable cutting speeds (e.g., at the tip of a ball end mill, where the speed is theoretically zero).
By swivelling the workpiece with a pL LEHMANN rotary table, the milling cutter can always be positioned at the optimal angle to the surface. This results in the machining taking place in an area of the cutting edge that is designed for the respective cutting speed. The results are:
- Increased service life: Typically around 20–30 % due to more even wear.
- Surface finish: An improvement of up to 35% in % performance through the elimination of vibrations and optimised chip evacuation.
Shorter toolsSince the workpiece is pivoted towards the tool, significantly shorter and stiffer milling cutters can be used, which in turn increases precision.
